In welcome news for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the government has extended the timeframe for amending income tax returns, providing business owners with greater flexibility and certainty when managing their tax affairs.

From the 2024–25 income year onwards, businesses with an aggregated annual turnover under $50 million will now have four years (up from two) to request an amendment to their income tax assessments. This amendment window starts the day after the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) issues a notice of assessment, or, if no notice is issued, from the date of lodgment.

For income years prior to 2024–25, the previous two-year amendment period still applies.

When Might You Need to Amend a Tax Return?

Common reasons for amendment requests include:

  • Incorrect data entry (e.g. transposed figures or missing income);
  • Forgotten deductions or misreported capital gains;
  • Overstated claims for deductions or offsets;
  • Changed circumstances after lodgment (e.g. revised invoices or subsequent business events).

Timely correction of errors is strongly encouraged. Where an amendment results in additional tax payable, general interest charges and penalties may apply — though voluntary disclosure is generally viewed more favourably than ATO-initiated adjustments.

If the ATO has already commenced a review or audit, any identified errors must be disclosed to the assigned tax officer, rather than submitted via the standard amendment process.

What Does This Mean for Business Owners?

The extended review period provides more opportunity to ensure your tax position is accurate and compliant. However, it is not a substitute for robust record-keeping and careful initial lodgement. Lodging accurately the first time remains best practice, but the longer amendment window gives SMEs added assurance should genuine mistakes occur.

Remember, the extended amendment period offers greater peace of mind, but good record-keeping and a proactive approach remain your best tools for managing your tax affairs effectively.
